Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena
One of our first stops on the honeymoon travel extravaganza was this cathedral in Madrid. We were pretty stoked to visit some old European cathedrals, even though I don’t assign myself to a certain religion I do find buildings and objects created in their name fascinating. Cathedrals have always been a place of awe for me. The structures themselves, the sculptures, statues, and the feelings within the walls are something that I enjoy investigating. Turns out this cathedral isn’t that old. It was started in the late 1880s and wasn’t finished until 1993. The name comes from a legend of a hidden image of the Virgin Mary in the walls of the city that helped to retake the city from the Moors in the 15th century. The cathedral is filled with so much to look at, I would definitely recommend a stop.
